About the General Manager

Message from Jeff Knueppel, General Manager

Every GM has a vision for the organization - mine is Building the Future thanks in large measure to the passage of Pennsylvania Act 89. Before Harrisburg took this bold action, the outlook for SEPTA was uncertain. Their vision for a long term funding solution for public transit made it possible to aggressively address our state of good repair backlog. In turn, these investments created a more stable environment that made it possible to advance new initiatives for our transit services. We also recognized that SEPTA does much more than simply carry people. You just have to look around and see all of the construction cranes and building sites to know that southeastern PA is on the move, and our multi-modal transportation network is the backbone for an efficient and productive five county region.

Building the Future defines how we are working to be part of this growth by focusing on five areas of strategic effort - Customer Experience, Employee Development, Rebuilding the System, SEPTA is a Business, and Safety as the Foundation. These fundamentals make up the roadmap of initiatives that the SEPTA Team has been focused on with the goal of making our transit system robust, safe, accessible, and attractive. The challenges we encountered have made us a stronger organization and team because we saw them as opportunities to be innovative and creative problem solvers while our accomplishments inspired us to continue to improve our core business - transit and customer service.

Working together we installed a critical safety system - Positive Train Control - for all SEPTA Regional Rail Lines; introduced the next generation mobile app for Android and iPhone users with enhanced travel tools and a real time vehicle locator feature; completed station and infrastructure construction and state of good repair improvements for all modes of service; purchased new locomotives, hybrid buses, and even our first all-electric buses; advanced our sustainability program with enhanced bike parking at stations; and supported the growth of a strong and productive workforce by providing the tools, training, and resources they needed

With the leadership and support of the SEPTA Board, I look forward to working with our talented SEPTA team to continue building the future for our customers, the region, and our organization.
